Berkley Coffee

Chai

Our house-brewed rendition of Masala-spiced milk tea.

Our brew was introduced on 2022-08-15, marking the 75th anniversary of India's independence from England after nearly 200 years of colonial rule.

We utilize a second flush tippy black tea from Sessa Estate in Assam (imported by Burman Coffee Traders), who have been growing since 1897.  Assam is dense with tea estates, and the origin of the tea varietal Camellia sinensis var. assamica, which is also massively cultivated in Sri Lanka and Kenya, collectively producing a majority of the world's black tea.  Assam tea is a standard component of both English Breakfast and Irish Breakfast blends, for its maltiness and dark color.    Colonial rule of Assam began in 1826, when it was annexed to British India as part of the Treaty of Yandabo ending the First Anglo-Burmese War.

In addition to using other mostly India-grown spices, we also incorporate chaga mushroom wild-harvested in New England by Charlie's Chaga.

We brew it with Minor Figures Organic Oat M*lk.  Minor Figures is a coffee company founded in London, England, who export their products to 25+countries, and actually manufacturer the milk that we buy from them in Canada.   Even the oat milk has an ex-British story!
